Now for something a little bit different. Most of us have done Narrowneck during the day, now come out and have a go at night running. 20km return journey to the lookout. Enjoy the night running and views of Katoomba lights at night. Note that a torch will be a mandatory item.

The Narrowneck Night Run is both splendidly scenic and refreshingly straightforward. From the main gate runners follow the only firetrail right out to its terminus at Clear Hill, then return. There are no significant junctions or deviations.

There are no biting hills on Narrowneck as there were at, say, Mt Portal or Woodford Dam, but the track does roll with plenty of sharp ups and downs and on the return leg the gradual ascent from Clear Hill to the fire tower does take nearly three kilometres.

The full option is an even 20 kilometres, a shorter option involves turning at the fire tower which makes a 14 kilometre run.

Narrowneck is a long, cliff-bound peninsula which divides the Jamison Valley from the Megalong Valley. As you head out, on your left is near-pristine bush framed by the Warragamba Catchment; on your right is cultivated farmland with Jenolan and Kanangra on the far western horizon. At the turnaround views of Lake Burragorang (Warragamba Dam) are quite clear and the Wild Dog Mountains are arrayed below you.

Aid at the turnaround is still subject to negotiation so be prepared for a 20K unsupported run- and don’t forget your lights! If the sky is clear, the nearly-full moon may well enable you to run with lights off for extended periods.

Parking room on Narrowneck is almost non-existent so we will carpool and use a mini bus.

Meet at Katoomba Pool carpark (Farnells Rd, Katoomba) by 6:30pm to register and then take a ride out to the start area. The run will start at 7:30pm and take roughly two hours. There will be a BBQ at the finish so bring your gold coins on the bus.
