Burralow bush run
Course Description
The newest addition to Running Wild, the Burralow Bush Run, is a collaboration with Hawkesbury Trail Runners and is the only trail event in the Hawkesbury, located northwest of Sydney. Starting and finishing at Bilpin Fruit Bowl, the run showcases beautiful trails around Kurrajong Heights, Bilpin, and Bowen Mountain, offering two distances.
As a non-profit event, all funds raised go to the local Rural Fire Service, with $10 from each registration donated to Bilpin, Kurrajong Heights, and Grose Vale RFS. The Burralow Bush Run honours the original Hawkesbury trail event, the Willy to Billy and Bilpin Bush Run.

Frequently asked questions
What are the distance options and their routes?
16km Devils Dash – The Devil’s Dash traverses the Devils Wilderness throughout national park land for 16kms. A fantastic distance for runners new to trail running or those keen to hit a PB with a respectable 200m elevation gain on accessible fire trail with gorgeous views across the Grose Valley. This course starts at 8:15am and has a 3.5-hour cut-off.
34km Billy to Bomo – The Billy to BoMo is a 34km route with several out-and-backs that will test your quads and mental strength! With 800m elevation gain, runners will set out on the fire trails down to Burralow Campground, before tackling the hills up to Kurrajong Heights, out and back to Bowen Mountain’s Crago Observatory, before back to the finish line at the Fruit Bowl. This course starts at 8:00am and has a 6-hour cut-off.
All Running Wild events are marked as well as possible, with course marshals at key points.
Are there cut-off times?
Yes, there is a 6-hour cut-off time for all runners to be finished. If you are not sure if you can make this cut off, contact us to help you decide.
Is there catering available on the day?
Runners and volunteers will get a free coffee/hot chocolate from our coffee van, and then hot food (usually a sausage sandwich) and a cold drink at the finish line.
How can I volunteer for the event?
We welcome volunteers for various roles including aid stations and course marshalling. Please contact us if you’re interested in helping out.
Are headphones / walking poles allowed?
Due to the terrain we run on, we ask all runners not to use headphones at our events. This is so you can stay aware of what others around you are saying and hear if anyone needs your attention. Also, a big part of trail running is being social – so have a chat along the way!
Walking poles are allowed at our events, but we ask runners to be mindful of where they use them and not hinder other runners on any narrow or technical trails.
How old do you have to be to run in this event?
For most events runners must be 16 years or over. However, if you are 14-16 years old you can email us about registering for events less than 21km, with details of a parent or running coach who we can talk to. Our Saints and Sinners Lap Race will allow runners as young as 11 years old, as long as they are in a team (3hr team or Juniors team) and they can run up to 2 laps (not consecutive laps). Contact us if you’d like to discuss any other circumstances related to age.
Where are the aid stations located and what will they provide?
The 16km course will have aid stations at the 4km, 9km and 12km marks. The 34km course will have aid stations at 8km, 11m, 17km, 21km and 27km marks. All aid stations will have fruit, water, lollies, chips. Some on the longer course will also have electrolytes and coke.
All aid stations have emergency pads and tampons, hand sanitiser, rubbish and recycling bins, friendly volunteers who are happy to help and are in contact with First Aid if needed.
There will be no cups at the aid stations on the course. As all runners are required to have the capacity to carry 500mls of water and to reduce our landfill contribution, we ask runners use their own collapsible cups or flasks.
Are there toilets available?
Toilets will be available at the Bilpin Fruit Bowl race hub, and at the campground (11km for long course runners)
If you need to go in the bush along the course, please move well off the trail and ensure you are more than 100m from any body of water (creeks/rivers). For minimal impact, pack waste for disposal after the event. If you have to dig a hole, make sure it is at least 15cm deep, and cover it up when done. You should pack out any toilet paper, pads and tampons as they don’t biodegrade.
What mandatory gear do I need?
You must carry at least 500 ml of water. In accordance with our policy, we have a “No Water No Result” rule, i.e. if you fail to carry water, you will fail to receive a result. Our on-course marshals will also be looking for this, so be sure to carry your water. We do not provide cups at aid stations.
Do I need any safety gear?
Whilst not compulsory, we recommend runners wear gloves on the trails, such as bike gloves, as these will help protect your hands in case of a fall. Injuries to hands are the most common injuries our Event Safety Services team see. Please be mindful of the weather and dress appropriately.
