Narrowneck Night run

Course Description

The Narrowneck Night Run, starting at Narrowneck Lookout, offers a splendidly scenic and straightforward experience. You’ll start in the light, enjoying the sunset and breathtaking views over the Megalong Valley.

The out-and-back course means no tricky turns, making navigation easy. As you return under the stars, this very popular race combines the beauty of a sunset run with the thrill of nighttime trail running.

What are the distance options and their routes?

14km – start on Narrowneck Firetrail (after being walked down the stairs from Narrowneck Lookout Carpark), run along the firetrail until you see the 6.88km aid station, where you turn around, run back the way you came, and up the stairs to the Lookout Carpark finish line.

24.7km – start on Narrowneck Firetrail (after being walked down the stairs from Narrowneck Lookout Carpark), run along the firetrail to the end where you will see the 12.2km aid station, where you turn around, run back the way you came, and up the stairs to the Lookout Carpark finish line.

What is the route for the Narrowneck Night Run?

Runners will be walked from the Narrowneck Lookout carpark, down the stairs to the Narrowneck Firetrail where the race will begin. All runners will head south west along the Narrowneck Firetrail, with 14km runners turning at the 6.88km mark to head back the way they came, and 24.7km runners turning at the end of the fire trail (12.2kms) to head back. The finish line is back at the Narrowneck Lookout carpark, at the top of the stairs. 

All Running Wild events are marked with pink tape.  This is a very straightforward course – straight down to the end along the ridge line, then back.  The course will only be marked in the sections where a runner may go wrong, but it is very hard to go wrong on Narrowneck (although if it’s misty, this may provide some challenges). 

Are there cut of times for this event?

There is no strict cut off for this event, but we estimate the final runner to come in around 4hrs after starting. Contact us if you are unsure whether you can meet that time.

Is there catering available on the day?

Runners and volunteers will get a free coffee/hot chocolate from our coffee van, and then hot food (usually a sausage sandwich) and a cold drink at the finish line.

How can I volunteer for the event?

We welcome volunteers for various roles including aid stations and course marshalling. Please contact us if you’re interested in helping out.

Are headphones / walking poles allowed?

Due to the terrain we run on, we ask all runners not to use headphones at our events. This is so you can stay aware of what others around you are saying and hear if anyone needs your attention. Also, a big part of trail running is being social – so have a chat along the way!

Walking poles are allowed at our events, but we ask runners to be mindful of where they use them and not hinder other runners on any narrow or technical trails.

 

How old do you have to be to run in this event?

For most events runners must be 16 years or over. However, if you are 14-16 years old you can email us about registering for events less than 21km, with details of a parent or running coach who we can talk to. Our Saints and Sinners Lap Race will allow runners as young as 11 years old. Contact us if you’d like to discuss any other circumstances related to age.

Where do I pick up my race bib for Narrowneck Night Run?

If you have registered to participate in Narrowneck Night Run, you can pick up your race bib and have your mandatory gear checked at Narrowneck Lookout carpark from 5:30pm. 

Where are the aid stations located and what will they provide?

 Aid Station (12.2km): Water, Electrolyte, Fruit, Lollies, Chips, Coke

All aid stations have emergency pads and tampons, hand sanitiser, rubbish and recycling bins, friendly volunteers who are happy to help and are in contact with First Aid if needed.
There will be no cups at the aid stations on the course. As all runners are required to have the capacity to carry 500mls of water and to reduce our landfill contribution, we ask runners use their own collapsible cups or flasks.

Are there toilets available?

There will be portaloos at the start/finishline, and a toilet at the fire tower out on Narrowneck (at the turn point of the short course option).

If you need to go in the bush along the course, please move well off the trail and ensure you are more than 100m from any body of water (creeks/rivers). For minimal impact, pack waste for disposal after the event. If you have to dig a hole, make sure it is at least 15cm deep, and cover it up when done. You should pack out any toilet paper, pads and tampons as they don’t biodegrade.

 

What mandatory gear do I need?

You must carry at least 500 ml of water. In accordance with our policy, we have a “No Water No Result” rule, i.e. if you fail to carry water, you will fail to receive a result. Our on-course marshals will also be looking for this, so be sure to carry your water. We do not provide cups at aid stations.

As well as the water, you will need a breathable waterproof jacket (with sealed seams and hood), an emergency space blanket, a beanie or buff, a thermal long sleeved top (polypropylene or wool), and a headlamp.

Do I need any safety gear?

Whilst not compulsory, we recommend runners wear gloves on the trails, such as bike gloves, as these will help protect your hands in case of a fall. Injuries to hands are the most common injuries our Event Safety Services team see. Please be mindful of the weather and dress appropriately. As this is a night event it is a good idea to have warm clothes near the finish line so you can get dressed quickly before getting too cold.

Where can I find the race results and photos?

Race results will be available on Tempus Timing and photos will be on Jodi McConaghy Photography in the 24hrs after the event has finished.
