Strap yourself in for arguably the toughest half marathon in Australia. Runners will start from the old Queen Victoria Hospital and head down, down, down Kedumba Walls to the campground. After crossing the river, runners will turn around and make the climb back up Kedumba Walls to the finish area. The entire course is on open fire trail, with approximately 800m of elevation change.
Whether you are training for Six Foot Track, want to test out your downhill speed, uphill toughness, or take in some magical views of Kedumba Walls, Mt Solitary and beyond, this is the race for you. We are expecting big numbers for this race, so get there early.
Running Wild is pleased to announce that Hoka OneOne is sponsoring the 2011 Kedumba Half Marathon. To check out their latest range head to www.hokaoneone.com.au
How to get there from Sydney: Follow Great Western Highway west. As you approach Wentworth Falls there is a ‘POTS’ store on your left as you reach the top of a hill. This POTS shop is on the corner of Kings Tableland Road. Turn left here and follow Kings Tableland Road for approximately 3-4km and you will reach the start/finish area
Course Description: The entire course is on graded fire trail/vehicle access tracks. The race will commence from the hospital and head down Kedumba Walls. Runners will pass the Jamison Valley maintenance track on your right – DONT TAKE THE TURN INTO JAMISON VALLEY. Continue down the trail into Kedumba Valley. You will reach the valley and cross a cattle grid. Be careful crossing the grid. Runners will continue past the turn off to Kedumba Ruins. Runners will take a right turn and run past Kedumba campground and get their feet wet crossing Kedumba River. A short distance after the river there will be a bollard indicating the turnaround. Runners will turn here and retrace their steps. The course has an elevation change of over 800m with the course broken up into two parts – 10.55km of downhill and 10.55km of uphill. The course elevation chart is attached.
Aid stations: There will be two aid stations. The first will be at the mid point of the course – approximately 5.25km and will be the turn point for the short course runners. The second aid station will be in the vicinity of Kedumba Campground around the 10km point. There will be water, sports drink and lollies at each aid station.
Toilet Facilities: As some of you may be aware, there are no facilities on hand in the vicinity of Queen Victoria Hospital. We will be arranging for 2 portaloos to be on hand at the start area. Bear in mind there will be a few runners present, so there may be a queue pre-race to use the loos, but help any runners with pre-race nerves.
RUNNINGWILD -V- STRIDERS MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE
We have been in touch with Sydney Striders and we are going to have an annual‘Runningwild -v Striders Mountain Challenge’. There is not much to worry about, except turning up and having a good run. Rules of the challenge are pretty straight forward:
All runners will register as individuals as per normal.
Runners will be identified as either Sydney Strider or Runningwild members (or in the case of dual members whatever group they want to be included with). the challenge will be decided by the best 6 individual times, added together to give an aggregate time. The first six must include 1 female runner.
Runningwild will be arranging a perpetual trophy to be presented to the winning club on the day. It is hoped that this event will carry on in years to come with the Kedumba Half Marathon being used as the challenge course between the two clubs in January of each year. It is hoped this challenge will help promote our series to approximately 700 Sydney Strider members that are mostly based in Sydney. This will double as a Sydney Strider super series race.
The 2011 Hoka One One Kedumba Half Marathon will be run in memory of Lisa-Maree
Lisa-Maree Major passed away on the 13th October 2011 aged 38 years.
Lisa was a wife, a mother of 2 beautiful children and was well known as an enthusiastic runner.
Lisa loved trail running, she loved the peace and beauty of these runs and the challenge of competing in running events in the mountains.
Lisa is sadly missed.
Running Wild will be making a donation to Lisa’s family at the event, to help them through this difficult time.
If you would like to make a donation, there will be an opportunity for you to do so on the day. All support is greatly appreciated.
